Electricity Distribution North implements measures to protect birds

By March 12 this year, Elektrodistribuenie North has installed more than 20 platforms for placing stork nests in the villages of Sreburna and Sitovo in Silistra region, as well as in settlements of Kaolinovo, Novi Pazar and Veliki Preslav municipalities in Shumen region. On the overhead power lines in the Dobrich region, company employees managed to place more than 210 bird protection devices. However, the plans for the remaining districts of the North-East Bulgaria will be canceled due to the state of emergency introduced by the National Assembly of the Republic of Bulgaria due to the spread of the coronavirus COVID-19.
In recent years, the need to put plastic insulation for bird protection has increased, as the path of movement of migratory birds has changed. The installation of the numerous wind turbines in North-Eastern Bulgaria has led many of the feathered species to choose new, unfamiliar routes and landing places when flying over. “This increases the risk of birds falling under voltage, and also creates serious power disruptions to some areas served by the company. In order to guarantee a peaceful stay and nesting of the feathered animals during the warm months of the year, we are in constant contact with the RIESV and the town halls. We react in the fastest way to all signals and coordinate our activities (including preventive measures in which we invest) with the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds.” — commented Director of Occupational Safety and Environmental Protection at ENERGO-PRO Varna — Plamen Petrov.
In 2019, in order to ensure long-term viable bird populations and comfort during nesting and overflight, the company installed 4,100 pieces of bird protection devices in the amount of 232 thousand leva and nearly 100 pieces of nesting platforms in the amount of over 11 thousand leva.
