The Czech company ENERGO-PRO a.s. has signed an agreement to purchase the large Baixo Iguaçu hydroelectric power plant in Brazil with a total capacity of 350 megawatts. The purchase price for the power plant, built in 2019 on the Iguazu River in the state of Paraná, exceeds 250 million euros (6.3 billion Czech crowns), making it the largest Czech investment in Latin America.

Once the necessary regulatory approvals have been obtained (this is expected to be done in the summer of 2025), the Baixo Iguaçu power plant will be the largest energy source in the ENERGO-PRO portfolio in terms of installed capacity. Currently, the company manages more than fifty hydropower plants in five countries around the world, and in addition to Brazil, it has a presence in Bulgaria, Georgia, Spain and Turkey. The total installed capacity amounts to 1500 MW. With the inclusion of Baixo Iguaçu, the installed capacity of the Czech group will increase to 1850 MW. This is comparable to the capacity of the Mochovce nuclear power plant in Slovakia.

The acquisition of the company in Brazil reinforces ENERGO-PRO's stable position in the Latin American energy market. Along with seven smaller power plants with a total installed capacity of 90 megawatts, which the company purchased last year, it is now acquiring a modern and large hydroelectric power plant. In addition, another hydroelectric power plant, Chorreritas in Colombia, is under construction, which is expected to start operating next year. “The expansion of the ENERGO-PRO portfolio in Brazil is a strategic step in the geographical diversification of our group, which helps us to strengthen our resilience to hydrological, geopolitical and economic risks,” said the CEO of ENERGO-PRO a.s. Jakub Pfeiffer at the signing of the agreement.
