EP North supports protected white stork population
Company employees install stork nest platforms to protect birds from live wires
Concerned about the safety of the storks, a family from the Varna village of Brestak alerted the electricity distribution company in Northeastern Bulgaria about a nest located in dangerous proximity to the wires of an overhead power line. EP North officials responded in a timely manner to the signal and installed a platform to keep the stork's nest at a safe distance from the wires and prevent possible contact with the current-carrying facility.
In recent months, the company has placed dozens of similar platforms in the places chosen for nesting by the protected feathered species - the poles of the power distribution network. The period before the spring migration of birds is extremely suitable for this type of activities to help increase the stork population by providing safer conditions for breeding offspring.
Since the beginning of the spring season, EP North plans to carefully and discreetly protect the already built and newly built birds from the warm countries in order not to interfere with their natural habits during their breeding season. It is known that gross interference in the life of storks during nesting could make them restless and drive them away from the chosen settlement.
The electricity distribution company carries out periodic inspections of the facilities on which the birds usually build their homes. In parallel with the prevention of the electricity distribution network in order to provide quality service to customers, electrical specialists also monitor for branches and straw from stork nests hanging dangerously above the wires. EPR North also responds to information submitted by the Society for the Protection of Birds, as well as to alerts from mayors and citizens of the respective settlements. The planned investments of the electricity distribution company in protective components for birds on the power lines - bird guards and bird protective insulation coatings of the supporting insulators are also continuing.
