Electricity consumption on weekends and holidays in North-Eastern Bulgaria has decreased compared to the same period in 2012, according to ENERGO-PRO data. The company, which supplies electricity to 1.1 million customers in the districts of Varna, Veliko Tarnovo, Gabrovo, Ruse, Silistra, Dobrich, Razgrad, Targovishte and Shumen, recorded an average of 9.3% lower consumption in the period from December 22, 2013 to January 1, 2014 compared to the same days of the previous year. During the Christmas holidays, from 22 to 26 December 2013 inclusive, the company's customers consumed more than 94,500 megawatt hours of electricity, which is nearly 14,300 megawatt hours less than in the same period in 2012. In percentage terms, this difference represents around 13.1% lower average consumption.

During the holidays and weekends around the New Year, in the period from December 27, 2013 to January 1, 2014 inclusive, electricity consumers in the territory served by ENERGO-PRO consumed on average 5.87% less than on the same days in 2012.

Traditionally, during the Christmas and New Year holidays, the highest electricity consumption was on New Year's Eve. Peak consumption was recorded at 18.00 on 31 December 2013, when the maximum load on the ENERGO-PRO Grids electricity distribution network was over 1,180 megawatts. For comparison, on December 31, 2012, the maximum electricity consumption was recorded at 19 hours and its value amounted to nearly 1, 250 megawatts.

The trend during the days during the Christmas holidays shows that the highest consumption was registered at 7 pm on December 23, 2013. Its values at that time were 1 010 megawatts, while at the same hour on 23 December of the previous year, the maximum load was 1 160 megawatts, which is 12.75% more.

The main reason for the reduced electricity consumption during the past Christmas and New Year holidays can be considered the higher average daily temperature compared to the same period of 2012. In 2013, average daily temperatures over the entire period were nearly 4.4 degrees, which is about 2.7 degrees higher than the same period of the previous Christmas and New Year holidays.
