The joint project of Elektrodistribuenie Sever and Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB) “Safe sky for birds in North-East Bulgaria”launched at the end of 2022. Its main goal is to prevent the mortality of endangered bird species, which is caused by electric shocks or collision of feathered birds with overhead power lines using proven successful practices among modern solutions for their protection.

One of the activities set for the implementation of the project was to carry out a bird mortality survey on key air power lines in the territory of the ERP North in order to identify priority areas for the placement of protection facilities. A preliminary GIS analysis of the electricity distribution network was carried out, based on information about habitat types, nest locations and endangered target species themselves. The field study was carried out with the participation of 15 experts from BSPB and based on data from the power distribution company for the medium voltage network, applying a well-established methodology for determining the mortality of birds from electric shock and collision with power lines. 176 zones with habitats of endangered birds with a total length of 1414 km were covered. The results of the survey show that the highest number of victims was recorded in the autumn in the August-October migration period, with a greater number reported in the districts of Dobrich, Varna, Razgrad and Shumen.

As a result of the study, 104 sections of the electricity distribution network in North-Eastern Bulgaria are defined as dangerous for birds and will be included in the planned activities for laying insulation. The actual work on the realization of the goals set in the project will start in the coming months after the delivery of the necessary equipment and materials. EPR North plans to secure more than 10,000 electric ladders in 28 Natura 2000 zones and key corridors between them. 100 safe nesting sites will also be provided for two of the target species on power poles by installing birdhouses.

Detailed information about the project activities, endangered bird species, range areas as well as the results achieved is published periodically on the project website https://safeskyforbirds.eu/.
