Electricity Distribution North invests BGN 1 million in bird protection devices

Following its policy to support the protection of biodiversity, every year Elektrodistribuenie North takes measures to protect the life of birds when landing or nesting on the facilities of the electricity distribution network in Northeastern Bulgaria. Over the next three years, the company plans to invest BGN 1 million in securing overhead power lines and protecting the population of feathered species. This season, ERP North is expected to install 1,250 new protective devices and 100 platforms before the spring migration of birds.

Electrical poles and wires are a place that birds often use to rest during the flyover. To preserve the life of the feathered, specialized teams install protective sleeves on the reinforced concrete posts, which do not allow a short circuit to occur when the wings come into contact with the wires.

The placement of bird guards is another reliable measure to secure power lines. The attachments prevent the feathered from landing on the steel lattice posts and thus protect them from coming under tension. They are made of insulating material and have spherical tips, thanks to which the limbs of birds are not injured when trying to land.

Electric poles are one of the most preferred nesting sites by stork pairs. The accumulation of dry branches and other easily flammable materials creates conditions for the occurrence of fires and the death of newly hatched birds. To preserve the population of the protected species, ERP North has installed platforms through which the homes of stork families are raised and secured.

In recent years, Elektrodistribuenie North has installed more than 5 thousand bird protection devices and 500 platforms for stork nests. Nearly 400 pillars were isolated and secured. Due to the tendency of birds to change their migratory route, the safety activities of electricity distribution companies are an annual process that takes place during the period before the spring and after the autumn migration.
