The electricians of ERP North have started the active activities of installation of bird protection devices (PSUs) on facilities from the electricity distribution network in North-East Bulgaria. The start of the securing work was timed to the end of the summer season and the harvesting of the fields in which a large part of the poles and power lines included in the list for installation of the PSUs are located. They were selected after preliminary field studies on bird mortality on key aerial power lines in North-East Bulgaria, carried out jointly with experts from the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB), which is a partner of the ERP North in the project “Safe sky for birds in North-East Bulgaria”.

So far, the specialists of Elektrodistribuenie North have installed bird protection devices on 247 poles, the most - 152, are in the districts of Shumen and Targovishte, from where the installation began with the first materials delivered in the areas of Hitrino, Pliska, Panayot Volovo, Tsarev Brod, Enevo. In the rest of the territory served by ERP North, 31 are secured, respectively, in the area of the Varna villages of Karglon, Suvorovo, Neofit Rilski, 18 near the town of Kubrat, Razgrad, 27 in the area of the village of Senokos, Dobrichko and 19 in the area of Pisarevo near Gorna Oryahovitsa. The activities on the pilot installation of PSUs for this year are planned to continue as long as the weather conditions allow in view of the upcoming winter season.

The project envisages securing more than 10,000 electric ladders in 28 Natura 2000 zones and key corridors between them. Along with the care for the protection of biodiversity among endangered bird species in Bulgaria, the installation of a PZU according to a project “Safe sky for birds in North-East Bulgaria”prevent unplanned power outages as a result of feathered animals colliding with overhead power lines. In this way, the normal operation of the power grid and the security in the electricity supply of the customers of ERP North will be ensured.
