The first guarantees of origin of “green” energy produced in Bulgaria, issued in Bulgaria, found their owner in Hungary. The first transaction of its kind was carried out by ENERGO-PRO Trading EAD and registered in the register of the Agency for Sustainable Energy Development. Guarantees of origin were recognised by Hungary and entered in its register. They were acquired by a local telecommunications company in accordance with Hungarian legislation and Directive 2009/28/EC of the European Parliament.

Guarantees of origin (GPs) are an electronic document that proves that a certain amount of electricity is produced from renewable sources (RES). Through them, the production of green energy is stimulated. By acquiring this document, the buyer contributes to the protection of the environment.

Guarantees of origin can also be purchased from Bulgarian companies, but given the specifics of our regulatory framework, they can only be traded together with the energy for which they are issued. In other words, the purchasing company must purchase the energy produced by the renewable energy and, at the same time, acquire the guarantees of its origin as a final consumer.

According to the organization of European energy regulators CEER, more and more consumers in Europe are willing to buy and use electricity produced from renewable sources. By raising their awareness in this area, they stimulate ecological productions, affirming the conservation of nature as a cultural need of developed societies. At the same time, the regulatory framework of the majority of European Union member states provides more freedom in the trade of guarantees of origin, allowing them to be traded both together and separately from the energy for which they are issued.

Energy produced from renewable sources is growing globally. According to a study by the International Energy Agency, by 2030, a quarter of the electricity that humanity uses will be from renewable sources. The environmentally friendly nature and decreasing cost of this production make it increasingly preferred in developed countries, which implement various measures to promote it. In this sense, the possibility of trading guarantees of origin is a measure to stimulate ecological electricity production and their purchase not only has an image effect for the consumers who acquire them, but also represents a real act of nature conservation.

ENERGO-PRO Trading EAD is part of the ENERGO-PRO Group, founded in 1994 in the Czech Republic. The company owns 47 hydroelectric plants with a total installed capacity of 860 MW.
