The FlexiGrid project demonstrates the purchase of flexible network services by users and manufacturers

Participants of the international FlexiGRID project reported on the implementation of the project work packages at a meeting in Switzerland. FlexiGRID is implemented in Bulgaria with the participation of ENERGO-PRO. The need for it arose in the context of the expected increasing share of renewable energy sources (RES) in the energy structure. The increased need for more capacity is a challenge for the electricity distribution network in terms of reliability, stability and security of supply. Under the 2030 European Renewable Energy Target, an increasing share of electricity will be generated by renewables connected to medium and low voltage grids.
In response to these current and upcoming challenges, the FlexiGrid project proposes to improve the performance of the distribution network, making it more flexible, reliable and cost-effective, through the development of hardware and software solutions. A single open source platform will integrate the various solutions, making them interoperable with the IT systems of the network operators.
The project in Bulgaria is at the stage of demonstration of network monitoring, control and flexibility, demonstration of local energy market for energy exchange and network services, demonstration of energy transactions between equal participants based on blockchain technology, demonstration of flexibility measures and electricity grid services.
At its core, the international FlexiGrid project is cloud-based software that communicates, monitors and controls a range of distributed energy resources to create smart, flexible local energy systems — from photovoltaic systems and home batteries to car charging stations and smart heating systems.
Addressing some of the biggest challenges of the energy transition, the project will bring know-how and solutions to key energy issues, some of which are projected to arise in the next five to ten years. By participating in the project, ENERGO-PRO will improve its ability to anticipate and mitigate future challenges in the ever-changing energy market.
