The FlexiGrid project has entered its final phase

ENERGO-PRO starts its participation in the project at the end of 2021
In November 2021, ENERGO-PRO joined a pilot project for the transformation of energy systems for our country. FlexiGrid is supported by 18 organizations in 8 countries. The main idea is to develop methods to achieve flexibility in the energy system and create a blockchain-based platform that allows electricity distribution companies to buy these grid flexibility services from producers and consumers. The project includes an analysis of the barriers to the adoption of innovative market designs and an assessment of the existing regulatory framework: to what extent it allows the development of business models that lead to increased flexibility in the work of network operators.
In Bulgaria, a demo scenario was developed, which in a test environment provides information on how the electricity distribution company can buy flexible services from consumers and producers connected to its network. For the implementation of the project, smart electricity meters were installed on selected pilot customers of ENERGO-PRO. Smart devices track production and consumption at intervals of 15 minutes. During the test period, a total of 21 manufacturers, consumers and prosumers connected to the company's network were provided with smart electricity meters, which were installed at their facilities located on the territory of Varna region. The total installed power of the customers participating in the demo scenario is over 8300 kW. The collected data will be visualized on FlexiGrid's IoT platform and the flexibility services will be provided to simulate the overall flexibility services exchange transaction.
The demonstration will provide options and solutions to optimize the operation of the distribution network, through the use of the platform achieving network monitoring and control of the exchange of electricity and network services between the participants. Thus, if necessary, flexibility services will be provided by a blockchain trading platform that, through energy balancing, controlling peak values, load regulation and self-control, will allow a significant reduction in network imbalances. This is a major advantage given the expected future increase in grid energy from renewable energy sources connected to medium and low voltage grids. The implemented demo scenario will give a chance to take measures and rational approaches related to the reliability and security of electricity supply, while avoiding additional or “excessive” investments in the network.
Addressing some of the biggest challenges of the energy transition, the project will bring know-how and solutions to key energy issues, some of which are projected to arise in the next five to ten years. By participating in the project, ENERGO-PRO will improve its ability to anticipate and mitigate future challenges in the ever-changing energy market.
